How Many Parts Are in the Combine?

A harvester is widely used in the agriculture industry, and today I am going to talk about how a rice harvester work. Firstly let’s look at the components of a harvester. The figure below shows the components of combine harvester, and we will discuss the function of each part in the blog.

A harvester mainly includes two parts: The working part and the moving part. The working part consists of a cutter head, conveyor, threshing and cleaning, lifting, and grain tank.

The cutter head includes a reel, cutter blades, feeding auger, transmission components and etc.

When the cutter head working, cutter blades and auger will cut and carry the crops to the conveyor by the reel. Then the feeding auger telescope rod will feed the crops into the chain.

The Conveyor Part

The next part is the conveyor part, after crop cutting by the cutter head, it will go to the conveyor, the conveyor is the connection between the cutter head and the thresher. The function of the conveyor is to send crops that come from the cutter head to the thresher.

After crops go through the conveyor, they will come into the thresher for threshing and cleaning. The function of the thresher is to thresh, select, and clean seeds from the straw and dirt.

Thresher is the core component of a harvester, it will thresh the seed from the straw and desperate rice/wheat from grass and dirt. There are many threshing structures, and we will talk about axial flow threshing structures.

The figure below shows the detailed structure of a thresher in a harvester.


A thresher includes an axial flow threshing drum, concave sieve, upper guide cover, and cleaning system.

The material separates the grain from the stem under the combined action of the rod teeth of the axial flow drum and the grid concave plate of the lower cavity, and the grain falls into the shaking plate of the cleaning mechanism through the gap of the grid concave plate

While the long stem moves backward under the action of the axial flow drum and the deflector and is discharged out of the machine. The threshing mechanism completes threshing by beating and brushing.

Threshing drum

The threshing separation device consists of a drum and a concave sieve. The drum is mainly composed of three parts: a feeding blade, feeding cone, and rod teeth; the concave plate is a grid concave sieve. The material goes through a threshing drum and hits with the concave sieve which threshes the seed from straw and grass.

Upper guide plate

The upper guide cover of the threshing drum is composed of an arc cover plate and a grass guide plate. Among them, the grass guide plate mainly cooperates with the threshing drum to guide the grain straw in a certain direction. The grass guide on the drum cover can be adjusted according to the actual harvesting situation.

The cleaning system of the thresher is to clean the seed from the straw and dirty, which cleans the crops after threshing. Moreover, it enables crops that are not completely threshing to go into the threshing drum again to do the re-threshing.

The cleaning system consists of a vibration sieve, cleaning fan, re-threshing components, and transmission components.

After materials threshing from the drum, it goes into the vibration sieve, and the fan will blow out the straw and dust, while clean seeds will fall onto the auger and send to the grain tank.

Lifting system

The next part of a rice combine harvester after the thresher is the lifting system, the function of the lifting system is to lift the clean crops from the bottom of the thresher to the grain tank.

The lifting system includes a lifting auger and body cover, by connecting the horizontal auger and vertical auger, the lifting system allows crops goes from the bottom of the thresher to the grain tank.

Moving part

After we talked about the walking part of a harvester, now we will talk about how a harvester move.

A harvester’s moving part consists of a gearbox and walking components, the gearbox is to transmit the power from the engine to the walking components. The moving part allows a harvester to move forward/backward and turn in different directions.

The walking component is a track type, it allows a harvester to move onto the muddy field without getting stuck. These components include chassis, sprockets, rollers, and crawlers.

The sprocket will drive the crawler moving and other rollers will enable the whole crawler to move together. With the working part and moving parts together, a combine harvester is able to do the harvesting and moving functions together.
