What is the Use of Combine Harvester in Agriculture?

A combine harvester is a machinery that involves cutting, threshing, and storage functions together. For different types of crops, it has different combine harvester models. In this blog, I am going to talk about track-type rice/wheat combine harvesters.

What is the use of a combine harvester?

The process of harvesting rice & wheat involves three steps:

  • cutting the paddy/wheat from the field
  • threshing rice/wheat from the straw
  • Storagerice/wheat into the grain tank

Therefore, a combine harvester includes three parts: A cutter head to cut crops from the field, a thresher for threshing crops, and a grain tank to store the rice/wheat.

What is the function/uses of the walking part on the combine harvester?

The first part is the walking part, the use of the walking part is to drive the machine moving and turning. In general, walking parts can be classified into two types: Wheel type and crawler/track type.

The photos above show the two types of combine harvester, the left photo is the wheel type, and the right photo shows the crawler/track type.

The main usage of the wheel-type harvester is harvesting on dry land. For example, wheat harvesting mainly uses a wheel-type combine harvester since wheat is planted on a dry field. However, some crops are planted in wetlands where the field is quite muddy. Under that situation, a wheel-type combine harvester will not be able to move on the muddy field. To solve the issue, a crawler/track combine harvester is used when harvesting on wet/muddy fields.

The crawler/track combine harvester walking part consists of crawler and rollers. With this structure, the ground pressure will be much lower compared to the wheel type, which enables machines can walk on the muddy without getting stuck. As paddy field need water for rice growing, paddy field is muddy during harvesting, therefore crawler/track combine harvester is mainly used for paddy/rice harvesting.

What is the function/uses of cutter part on combine harvester

The second part is the cutter head and there are also two types of the cutter head, one is a full feeding cutter head, another one is a half feeding cutter head.

The full-feeding cutter head collects crops with straw together and sends them into the threshing part for threshing, while the half-feeding cutter head only collects the head part (Crop parts), then sends it to the threshing drum. The difference in cutting method between two cutter heads leads to different results of straw after harvesting.

What is the function/uses of the threshing part on the combine harvester?

After crops are cut by the cutter head, the crops will be transited to the threshing part. The function of the threshing part is to split and clean the crops from the straw. Threshing parts include a threshing drum and vibration sieve, the use of the threshing drum is to split crops, while the vibration sieve is to clean the crops out from dust, and straw.

For full feeding combine harvester, since straw is sent into the threshing drum, the straw will be cut into small pieces and thrown out from the combine harvester. But for half-feeding combine harvester, only crop parts will be sent into the threshing drum for threshing, the straw will not go into the threshing part, which allows straw can be used for animal feeding after harvesting.

The advantage of a full-feeding combine harvester is its simple structure and lower cost, but it cannot keep straws for animal feeds. While the advantage of half-feeding combine harvester is to keep straws and need less power due to less threshing workload, the manufacturing cost is higher and the structure is more complicated.

What is the function/uses of the storage tank on the combine harvester?

After crops are threshing from the thresher, it goes into a grain tank for storage. There are also two types of grain tanks of combine harvesters. One is an unloading pipe storage grain tank, which is also called a big grain tank. Another is a sack unloading grain tank, which is called a small tank.

Small grain tank needs workers to stand on the combine harvester to unload crops during machine working.

While a big grain tank allows crops to unload through a discharge pipe without loading manually during harvesting, it can save labor for harvesting jobs.

Uses of combine harvester in agriculture 

In general, the use of combine harvester in agriculture is to save laborers from manual farming jobs and improve the efficiency and output of traditional agriculture.

With the use of a cutter head, threshing part, and storage tank, it allows machines can do cutting/harvesting, threshing/cleaning, and storage/unloading function into one machine together.

The use of combine harvester in agriculture is to enhance agricultural mechanization, which solves the shortage of agricultural labor and highly improves the efficiency of traditional farming. It builds up the foundation for agriculture and It has a huge influence on the progression of human being,
